ntfs security permissions how reset

Is there a way to reset all the ntfs permissions back to their defaults?
I have performed an Upgrade installation and most of my old files and settings are hidden under folders to which as logged in as the administrator I do not have access (access denied)
So starting outlook for example or trying to view my pictures comes back with errors of you do not have permission etc etc etc
Any Ideas?

We have found that logging into the original domain admin ID or re-enabling the local administrator account and using that gets past the strange new limitations that have been placed on members of the local 'administrators' group.
This seems to be defective, overzealous behavior caused by developers under tremendous pressure to 'secure' an otherwise insecure OS.
Note that also even the core default admin IDs and administrators groups officially have incomplete rights to the root folder of the C: partition. Full rights belong only to 'Trusted Installer', an internal ID and not a usable group.
We have experienced serious side-effects as user test files are displaced during installations & upgrades that involve any pre-existing data. That will never do for the eventual production release.

It is quite possible that the issue you are experiencing is the due to those storage areas having been private to their accounts in the prior XP build. This is the same issue as has alway existed when reinstalling when some storage only had NTFS grants to local accounts that post-reinstall no longer exist; and the solution is the same, namely taking ownership of the storage area while logged in as an admin if needed and then changing the permissions.
Note that this is NOT resetting permissions to install defaults, which would not in this case (if this is the case) cause a change.

Yes I believe you are correct as that seems to be the case - I have been taking ownership as and when i run into problems - its just VERY tedious thats all and I'm worried I'm opening up more security risks by making my files nearly open to everyone. Im not quite sure how much permission everything needs you see. I've seen in other posts about using secedit to re-apply default security templates but I dont think I have the syntax right as it doesnt appear to be changing much.
I'd love there to be some utility once I have ownership of all files on my computer to resest the permissions. Anyone know of anything???
In anycase when RC1 comes out I'm going to try a clean install from a fully formatted Hard Drive as the NTFS permissions are all over the place at the mo.
In anycase the few probs I was having seem to be solved by taking ownership etc - its just taken me two long laborious days to do that, phew!!!!!!!
